Basic Safety Tips for Hiking - Do's & Don'ts of Hiking


Hiking can be a great and enjoyable outdoor sport, but in order to have a positive experience, it is critical to emphasize safety. Here are ten hiking safety tips:

Plan ahead of time:

Investigate the trail you intend to hike, including its length, difficulty level, and weather forecast.

Inform someone you trust about your hiking plans, including the times you intend to start and finish.

Choose the Correct Route:

Choose a trail that is appropriate for your level of fitness and expertise. Beginners should begin with simple, well-marked pathways.

Examine the Weather Forecast:

Pay attention to the weather forecast for the day of your hike. If severe weather is forecast, postpone or cancel your hike.

Appropriate Dress:

Wear moisture-wicking, layered clothing appropriate for the weather. Cotton absorbs moisture and should be avoided.Wear appropriate footwear with traction and ankle support. Before the hike, break in new hiking boots.

Carry the following items:

Bring a map, compass, GPS device, first-aid kit, multi-tool or knife, flashlight with additional batteries, and a whistle.
Bring plenty of water and high-energy foods. If you intend to refill from natural sources, make sure you have a water purification device.

Hike as a Group:

Hiking in a group is safer than hiking alone. If you must hike alone, notify someone of your intentions and approximate return time.




Stick to the Trails:

Follow established trails and follow designated signs and markers. Hiking off-trail can result in accidents and environmental damage.
